What we do

Institutional Banking and Markets successfully competes directly against the largest investment banks in the world.

Our local and global teams deliver award-winning, tailored and innovative total capital solutions to some of the world’s biggest companies.

We service top tier corporate and government clients Australia wide, and through a global office network (with offices in London, Malta, Auckland, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong).

Essentially, we are Commonwealth Bank’s primary face to the market for all complex financing and advisory functions for our corporate and major government clients.

Our aim is to proactively satisfy the full spectrum of our clients’ business needs by advising on the critical issues surrounding debt and equity capital markets, risk management and transactional banking. We do this by:

  • Using the Group’s unique insights and research.
  • Collaborating with each other and learning from our collective experience.

Roles and responsibilities

Within our area of the business, we typically offer several key roles for graduates. They are: 

  • Equities Research Associate Analyst - assists in producing comprehensive company and industry analysis in the equities research area, and supports in the marketing and development of research ideas to Commonwealth Bank’s institutional clients and sales teams.
  • Relationship Manager- works with the team to analyse the capital structure and financial needs of clients - with a focus on providing strategic advice on optimal capital structure and ratings, as well as acquisitions and divestments. Can also be responsible for producing high quality pitch materials.
  • Financial Analyst- undertakes analysis of the financial viability of projects. Assist in the preparation of client presentations, credit papers, the negotiation of commercial arrangements and facilities with clients.
  • Commodities, FX or Interest Rate Dealer and Trader - Dealers provide Global Markets products and services to a defined corporate client base and business partners. Traders provide pricing support across all products to client base and  support senior traders with book management.
  • Associate Economist - assists the economic team in providing economic research and analysis, maintaining and building economic databases and models, communicating information about economic issues, and generally promoting the work of Global Markets.

A day in the life

The Institutional Banking and Markets Graduate Program is a one-year intensive program of organised skills learning.

This program has been designed to provide you with the skills necessary to develop into a successful banking professional.

The program starts with a one-week induction. This provides you with a core understanding of the Institutional Banking and Markets business, including where it fits within Commonwealth Bank as a whole, and how the individual parts of the Institutional Banking and Markets business interact together.

During the program, you will undertake three rotations in different parts of the business. This ensures you have a diverse experience and are able to create synergies between your placements.

You will also have the opportunity to attend networking functions and meet key business leaders within Institutional Banking and Markets.

Depending on where you are placed within the business, you will be required to complete one or more of the following accreditation programs:

  • AFMA Core Accreditation
  • AFMA Specialist Accreditation
  • Omega Lending Program

On a day-to-day basis, you can expect to gain hands-on experience through:

  • Financial analysis
  • Financial modeling
  • Preparation of pitch books
  • Undertaking research projects
  • Dealing directly with internal and external clients
  • Attending client and management meetings.
