Indigenous employment

Our staff reflect the communities they serve

As Australia’s largest financial services organisation with over 1,000 branches, the Commonwealth Bank is in an excellent position to offer employment opportunities to Indigenous people across the country.

As a signatory to the Australian Employment Covenant, we’ve set a target of providing 350 permanent positions to Indigenous job seekers by June 2012. We also provide opportunities for all our staff, customers and the wider community to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures.

Direct recruitment

Ensuring our staff understand and reflect the communities they serve helps us deliver better customer service. The Indigenous Banking Team is working with Job Services Australia employment organisations and other providers to recruit Indigenous job seekers to work at the Commonwealth Bank.

School-based traineeships

Through our Indigenous School Based Traineeships, we provide 80 traineeship positions each year for Year 11 and 12 students to gain valuable employment skills while completing their studies. The program provides career pathways for Indigenous high school students, and helps the bank identify and promote young talent.

Skills Development Program

We also run programs that provide up-skilling opportunities to Indigenous job-seekers who want to pursue careers with the Commonwealth Bank. Our Skills Development Program works with unemployed Indigenous people to help prepare them for applying for jobs with us. The four-week program delivers training in customer service values, sales skills and interview techniques.
