Health and Welfare

Health

The Commonwealth Bank is privileged to partner with organisations that are dedicated to research and awareness programs that promote the health and wellbeing of Australians.

Breast Cancer Institute of Australia

Each year, the Commonwealth Bank's support for the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia, helps to produce The Australian Women’s Health Diary. This diary contains health and finance tips for women and their families.

Since 1999, the diary has raised $4.3 million for the breast Cancer Institue of Australia to support vital clinical trials research for the cure and prevention of breast cancer.

The diary will again be available to purchase in selected Commonwealth Bank branches from October 2009.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia

Our support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia helped develop Australia’s first tissue bank for research into this disease.

From 2006 - 2008, the Commonwealth Bank partnered with the PCFA to deliver a series of men's health promotion forums throughout Australia to encourage men and their families to be proactive about their health.

In 2009, we are proud to continue our support of the PCFA through a range of awareness and fundraising initiatives, including our participation in the annual Movember campaign.

Humour Foundation

We were a founding partner of the Humour Foundation’s Clown Doctors ten years ago and continue to support their work today. Clown Doctors bring fun and humour to children’s hospitals around Australia by using magic, mime and mimicry. This program is funded by the Staff Community Fund.

Welfare

Our social welfare partnerships demonstrate our support for everyday Australians in times when they need it most.

Legacy

The Commonwealth Bank has supported Legacy and the Legacy Badge Day Appeal since 1998. Over the past decade, our assistance has helped Legacy raise in excess of $25 million dollars. These funds allow Legacy to continue to provide 115,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependents with essential services such as counselling, special housing, medical assistance, advocacy and social support.

Australian Red Cross - Disaster relief

We are proud to support the Australian Red Cross during times of natural disaster. By making our branch and call centre teams available to process donations, funds can quickly go to where they are needed.

Our support has helped Red Cross to assist thousands of people in desperate need, ranging from the Sichuan Earthquake and Myanmar Cyclone in 2008 to the Victorian Bushfires and Queensland Floods in 2009.

Midnight Basketball

Midnight Basketball engages youth in at risk areas through sport and educational activities. Held during school terms on a Friday or Saturday night, the young people play basketball and participate in workshops designed to address issues such as financial literacy, drugs, alcohol, anger management and finding employment. This program is funded by the Staff Community Fund.

Australian Business and Community Network

The Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) inspires, challenges and engages businesses to have a greater positive impact in the community. As a member of the ABCN, the Commonwealth Bank helps run programs that mentor students, provide support and mentoring for high school principals, and support reading and literacy for students.
