The Grow Zone
Sixteen students supported by the special education annexe at Nhulunbuy High School in East Arnhem Land will benefit from a Financial Literacy Grant to fund ‘The Grow Zone’. In this program, the students will create a garden centre business that sells pavers and concrete garden ornaments to members of their local community. The students will be responsible for taking orders, balancing order sheets, monitoring budgets and managing profit. From this exercise the school plans to develop a sustainable business which will expand their financial independence within the community.

Financial Literacy Games
The Northern Territory Open Education Centre has been awarded a Financial Literacy Grant for its program ‘Financial Literacy Games’, which is an extension of its current program. The grant will be used to develop educational games which advance student learning. The games encourage the repeated use of important financial terminology and the opportunity to use the concepts in simulated, ‘real-life’ situations, which some of the students might not otherwise experience. They will also require students to engage in decision making and realise the consequences of their decisions.
