Australian financial literacy assessment

From 2005 to 2008, the Commonwealth Bank Foundation ran the Australian Financial Literacy Assessment program, a tool for teachers to develop and assess students’ overall skills in financial literacy and identify individual students’ financial literacy strengths and weaknesses.

The assessment was designed to help schools measure students’ learning, competency and understanding of financial literacy and identify improvements in these areas over time. It was made available to students in Years 9-10 throughout Australia at no cost.

The program was developed by Educational Assessment Australia, part of the University of New South Wales and a respected provider of quality educational measurement and assessment services in Australia.

The program has provided valuable insight into the financial literacy levels of Australian students since it began in 2005. Due to the changing assessment landscape in schools and subsequent drop in participation numbers, the Foundation no longer runs this program. However, the findings of the assessment contributed to the award-winning StartSmart program, which is delivered to primary and secondary school students around Australia.
