Commonwealth Bank statement provided to A Current Affair

20 February 2003

On the Channel 9 A Current Affair program on Wednesday 19 February, a story was televised relating to a customer wrongfully receiving a large deposit to her account.

The Bank responded to the program detailing its involvement in the processing of the transaction. A copy of the Bank’s statement follows:

"I refer to your enquiry regarding the matter involving Ms Janine Tiernan.

As you are aware, this matter has been dealt with through the Queensland Courts.

The Commonwealth Bank’s role in this matter was to process the transaction. The funds were credited direct to the account number provided by the third party organisation, acting on the instructions of the executor of the estate, by direct entry.

The Bank’s investigation into this matter found that correct procedures had been followed."
