The Group has measured and reported its property carbon emissions since 2001 and in 2009 began reporting on the emissions resulting from business travel. In 2009 we also established a carbon reduction target for our Australian operations of 20% by June 2013, measured against 2008-09 levels.

1 All metrics capture data from Australian domestic operations only (excluding Bankwest) unless otherwise stated.
2 Emissions relate to consumption of electricity, gas and fuel (gasoline and diesel) by domestic retail and commercial properties, the business use of domestic tool-of-trade vehicle fleet, dedicated bus services, business use of private vehicles and domestic ATMs. Due to the electricity billing cycle, 8% of 2010-2011 electricity data was estimated to meet publication deadlines.
3 Emissions relate to employee business travel in aircraft and hire cars and taxi travel. Only flights taken by Australian-based employees, and booked through the Group’s ‘Cliqbook’ booking system; and hire cars booked through ‘Cliqbook’ and used in Australia are included in the scope.
We have a Group Environment Policy which creates a framework for understanding
and managing direct and indirect environmental impacts, as well as
environmental risks and opportunities.

82% of our domestic carbon emissions come from the commercial and retail properties we occupy, which is why we’re working hard to improve their environmental performance.
Over the past two years we have continued to upgrade our commercial property portfolio with the objective of achieving a National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) rating of at least four stars in all new commercial tenancies. Many of our new properties will score even higher. For example, Commonwealth Bank Place, which was completed in 2011, has been designed to rate five stars under NABERS and six stars under the Green Star Office Design standard.
We are also working to improve the energy efficiency of our existing retail properties. Throughout 2011 we implemented a suite of energy efficiency projects, following the successful trials conducted in 2008-09. By revising our design and fit-out guidelines for new and refurbished branches, we have ensured that future upgrades will be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
