Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) is a global electronic transaction standard named after the three organisations that established it. The EMV standard enables EFTPOS terminals worldwide to process chip-based debit and credit cards.
We've created a video that demonstrates how customers with EMV chip cards can process payments with your EMV-compatible EFTPOS terminal.
Why are we upgrading to EMV standards?
Chip cards offer a more secure way to process card transactions. A chip card
has a microchip embedded in the card. It contains security data and software
which provides greater protection because it is more difficult to fraudulently
copy the details of the card. Better security means fewer disputed
transactions.
What is a chip card and how do you recognise one?
A chip card is commonly referred to as a ‘smart card’. They are called smart
cards because the microchip offers more functionality than a standard magnetic
stripe, which just stores data. Merchants may have noticed some customers
already have chip cards as they are widely used across Europe and Asia. Banks
in Australia are currently introducing chip cards and these will become more
common over the next 12 months. The chip is always on the left hand front side
of the card. Chip cards being issued today still have a magnetic stripe so the
card can be processed in EMV- and non-EMV-compliant terminals.
How will I be upgraded to an EMV-compliant terminal?
We will arrange the upgrade for all the terminals we own. Most merchants using
the Ingenico 5110 and Ingenico 7910 mobile terminals will have to download
software using our Terminal Management System (TMS). This means no hardware
swap-out is required. Merchants who own their terminals will need to contact
their supplier to discuss how and when they can be upgraded to an EMV-compliant
terminal.
How will transaction processing change with an EMV terminal?
Once your terminal has been upgraded, you must always insert the chip card into
the chip slot of the terminal. After you ‘dip the chip’, follow the prompts on
the terminal. If you swipe a chip card by mistake, you will be prompted to
insert the card into the chip slot. Always try to process the transaction by
inserting the chip card first and following the prompts on your terminal. We
will provide an updated user guide to merchants when their terminal is
upgraded.
Where do I insert the chip card in my terminal?
Chip card slots are in different positions depending on the terminal hardware.
The Ingenico 5110 and 7910 terminals both have a chip slot in the front of the
PIN pad.
Will it cost more to process a chip card transaction?
Standard merchant services fees and charges apply to all transactions including
chip card transactions. Refer to your pricing schedule for details.
Can I still process magnetic stripe cards after I am upgraded to
EMV?
Yes, your terminal will still allow you to swipe a magnetic stripe
Do I have to use the chip card to process transactions?
Yes, you will need to insert all chip cards after the EMV upgrade. If you swipe
a chip card your terminal will prompt you to insert the card. Further details
will be provided on EMV transaction processing closer to the time of
upgrade.
