Contactless Payments MasterCard PayPass and payWave FAQs

Commonly Asked Merchant Questions

Is there any greater risk by not getting a signature or PIN for contactless transactions of under $100?

No, it is the same as any credit or scheme debit card that you accept through your terminal. Merchants are protected when accepting MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave transaction of $100 or less as the card issuer is not able to chargeback the transaction due to no signature or PIN being obtained.

Can I process contactless transactions of $100 and above?

No, your reader will not be activated for transactions above $100 and your customer will insert their card as usual into the chip reader.

What do I need to be able to accept MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave?

You will need to be using our Premium EFTPOS solution which uses PC EFTPOS to integrate your Commonwealth Bank pinpad to your Point of Sale. One of our installers will ensure you have the right pinpad software version, then simply connect a contactless reader to your Ingenico 5110 pinpad.

How do I process a contactless transaction?

It is simple. You initiate a credit transaction from your Point of Sale as usual. Our pinpad and reader recognise when the amount is under $100 and will enable the reader. You and your customers can tell when to ‘tap’ a card as one green light starts flashing on top of the reader. After you tap the card you will hear a ‘beep’ and then see an “Approved” response on the reader and pinpad screens.

Where do MasterCard® PayPassTM  and Visa payWave transactions appear on my settlement receipt?

Mastercard PayPass and Visa payWave transactions appear in your credit total  on your settlement receipt, just like any other credit card.

Managing Commonly Asked Customer Questions

What is MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave?

It is a new "contactless" way to pay. No signature or PIN is required for purchases under $100. It's like having exact change wherever you go. Simply tap your card against the contactless reader when you pay, rather than swiping your card or handing it to the cashier.

How do contactless payments benefit me?

• It's like having exact change wherever you go, so you don't have to worry about carrying a lot of cash or looking for change

• You are in control because your PayPass or payWave card never leaves your hand at checkout

• With PayPass and payWave you get better record keeping of all your purchases then using cash for those small everyday items

• It’s a fast and convenient payment method, especially at places where speed is essential, like at movie theatres, fast food restaurants, convenience stores and more .

What do you need to be able to use MasterCard PayPass or Visa payWave?

All you need is a MasterCard or Visa card with the PayPass or payWave feature. The Commonwealth Bank offers customers a MasterCard PayPass  credit or debit card.

Are MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave safe?

Yes it is:

• You are in control - your contactless card never leaves your hands to make a payment

• No accidental payments - your  contactless card must be extremely close to the reader at checkout to work

• Not billed twice - even if you tap more than once at checkout, you'll only get billed once for your purchase

Why aren't signatures or PINs required?

To ensure that using MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave is as simple and convenient as cash, retailers/merchants that accept these cards do not require you to sign or enter a PIN for smaller purchases (under $100). However, for your protection, purchases $100 and above generally require a signature or PIN to be used.
