Payment methods

You will need to pay a minimum monthly payment on your credit card, unless your balance is zero or in credit. You can choose to pay the full balance, a proportion of the balance or a set amount. Payment methods include:

  • NetBank: transfer funds for easy online payment.
  • In person: Going into any branch or Australia Post outlet.
  • Phone: call 13 2221 and follow the automated service.
  • Mail: complete and mail your statement payment section along with your cheque or money order.
  • ATM: use any Commonwealth Bank ATM to transfer funds from your linked cheque and/or savings account.
  • Autopay: set up an automatic direct debit from your savings or transaction account to cover your minimum payment each month or pay off the balance.

Struggling to repay your credit card

If you fall behind with your payments, the first step is to stop using your credit card and ask any additional cardholder to do the same.

You should also contact your nearest Commonwealth Bank branch, or ring 13 14 31 from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. The Commonwealth Bank may be able to assist in times of financial difficulty and will consider a full range of options for dealing with your individual situation.  We can help you manage your debt and create a payment plan budget if necessary.

Minimum payment

The minimum payment is the least amount you must pay by the due date. This amount is usually $25 or 2% of the closing balance, whichever is greater.  If your closing balance is less than $25, you pay the whole of the closing balance.  If you don't pay the minimum payment by the due date, you may be charged a late payment fee, and stop or close your account.

Set up Direct Debits

Automate your bill payments using your credit card, so you won't need to worry about missing a deadline again, whether it's a variable amount (such as a phone bill) or a set amount (such as an insurance premium).  Just follow these easy steps:

  • Decide on the bills you would like automatically paid.
  • Call the relevant service provider (eg Energy Australia or Optus)
  • Tell them you would like to set up a Direct Debit, and give them your credit card number, expiry date and card verification code (the last 3 digits on the back of your card).

If you ever wish to cancel a Direct Debit on your credit card, simply call your service provider.

How interest is calculated

If your card provides you with an interest free period, and you pay the balance in full by the payment due date, you will pay no interest (unless you have done a cash advance or carry an outstanding balance).  Interest will be charged if you do not pay the full balance by the due date.

Interest is calculated at the end of the statement period, and then charged to your account on the last day of each statement period.  We start by working out the average daily balance (ADB) outstanding over the statement period.

Then we calculate the 'daily rate'. We work this out by dividing each annual percentage rate (APR) applying to your card (e.g. standard rate or balance transfer rate) by 365.  We then multiply the ADB by the daily rate.  Finally, this number is then multiplied by the number of days in the statement period.

Learn more about interest.
