Establish a budget
Compare your expenses against your income to determine just how much you can safely spend each month. Use our budget calculator for assistance.
Use the interest-free period
If you have to make a large purchase or cover a large bill, you can use the up to 55 days interest free option to minimise the interest repayments.
Know how often you will use your card
If you don't use your card for everyday purchases, choose the No Annual Fee credit card. If you plan to use your card on a daily basis, choose a card featuring the Commonwealth Awards Program and make it work for you by earning awards points each time you use your card.
Protect your funds
Guard your credit card as if it were cash, and to protect your PIN, don't let others see what you're typing at the ATM.
Report lost or stolen cards immediately
The moment you realise you've lost your card or that it's been stolen, report it by calling 13 2221. We can cancel your card, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from anywhere in the world. If you're calling from overseas, find out more.
Using your card over the internet
We suggest you check the web site you are using is encrypted before you input your credit card details. Here are a couple of things to look out for:
Secure Internet Shopping (SIS)
Once you sign up for Secure Internet Shopping you can use your credit card online with total confidence. All you need to do is enter your security information when you make a purchase.
We recommend you take several payment methods with you when you're travelling in case you have any problems with your credit card. Find out more on using your credit card overseas.
Can't make payments?
If you fall behind with your payments, the first step is to stop using your credit card and ask any additional cardholder to do the same. You should also advise the Bank as soon as possible so we are aware of your situation and can advise you of your options and, if necessary, discuss a payment plan.
Loan insurance protection?
For peace of mind against the worst, we recommend CreditCard Plus insurance. Your card will be repaid in full should you become disabled, involuntarily unemployed or even in the event of death. Conditions and fees apply.
