Multiple currencies

The Travel Money Card can store up to six foreign currencies at any one time. The applicable currency will automatically be used for the country you are in, if you have that currency on your card.

Currency order

If you have more than one currency on your card, a currency order applies. This means that in some circumstances, the currency that is first in the order will be used. The default currency order is:

  1. United States Dollars (USD)
  2. Euros (EUR)
  3. Great British Pounds (GBP)
  4. Australian Dollars (AUD)
  5. Japanese Yen (JPY)
  6. New Zealand Dollars (NZD)
  7. Hong Kong Dollars (HKD)
  8. Canadian Dollars (CAD)
  9. Singapore Dollars (SGD).

If you only have GBP and CAD on your card, the default order is GBP then CAD, for example.

The circumstances in which the default currency order applies are:

You are reloading your Travel Money Card via BPAY.

Example: you have Euros (EUR) and New Zealand Dollars (NZD) on your Travel Money Card, and you want to buy AUD2,000 worth of NZD. If you use BPAY to purchase AUD2,000, you will automatically buy EUR, as this currency is higher in the default currency order. To change the currency order, log on to the Travel Money website and reorder the currencies so NZD is highest on the list. This should be done before you reload and buy the currency.

You haven’t loaded the currency of the country of your electronic transaction.

Example: you have Euros (EUR) and New Zealand Dollars (NZD) on your Travel Money Card, and you are withdrawing cash from an ATM in India. Your Travel Money Card will automatically use EUR and convert them to Indian Rupees (INR). In this case, a cross-currency conversion fee will apply.

You have insufficient funds of a particular currency to process the transaction or for a fee to be applied.

Example: you have Euros (EUR) and New Zealand Dollars (NZD) on your Travel Money Card, and you are paying for a meal costing EUR26 in France. However, you only have EUR15 left on your card. Instead of declining the transaction, your card will convert NZD into EUR to pay for your meal. In this case, a cross-currency conversion fee will apply.

A fee applies (e.g. card replacement).

Example: you have Euros (EUR) and New Zealand Dollars (NZD) on your Travel Money Card and both your existing cards are lost or stolen. On issue of two replacement cards the card replacement fee will be taken from the EUR loaded on your card, as it is the currency highest on the default currency order list.
