Protect yourself online

There are important steps you should take to protect yourself from online threats such as financial crimeware and identity theft. Below are four key steps to using NetBank safely.

Register for NetCode

NetCode SMS is a highly effective yet convenient authentication system requiring single-use passwords to authorise certain NetBank, credit and debit card activities and transactions. The single-use password is sent to your mobile phone via an SMS message and only remains valid for 30 seconds.

Traditional authentication relies on ‘something you know’ such as a password or security questions. Adding a second layer of security requiring ‘something you have’ such as a mobile phone protects you from evolving online threats such as financial crimeware and identity theft. As the NetCode SMS single-use password is sent directly to your mobile phone, cyber criminals are unable to authorise fraudulent transactions.

View our demo to see how NetCode SMS protects you – you can register for your free NetCode security upgrade via the ‘SMS Security’ page, accessed from the ‘Security’ menu in NetBank.

Email Notification

Security notifications also appear as a secure bank message in NetBank – to determine the authenticity of emails claiming to be from the Commonwealth Bank you can login and check there is an identical message under ‘New Messages’.

If you did not perform the activity, immediately notify the NetBank Help Desk on 13 2221 option 4 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

To ensure that you receive these important notifications please keep your email address up-to-date. If you need to update your email address, login to NetBank, then click on the 'My contact details' option under the 'Profile and preferences' tab.

NetBank Last Login & Activity Log

NetBank maintains a record of user access and activity for your peace of mind. The first screen displayed after a successful login shows the date and time of your last login. Additionally, the full history of your activity can be viewed by going to the ‘Security’ tab, then selecting ‘Online History’. If you find any unusual activity, immediately notify the NetBank Help Desk on 13 2221 option 4 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
