Secure Internet Shopping

Secure Internet Shopping provides a more secure way to shop online by offering added protection against possible fraudulent use of your debit or credit card.

Secure Internet Shopping just got safer with NetCode

The internet has changed the way we shop for the better. Now you can find what you need without having to leave the house, or worry about a car park. So to help keep you even more protected when you shop online, we have enhanced our Secure Internet Shopping service with NetCode.

What is NetCode?

NetCode is a security feature currently used in our online banking service, NetBank, to authorise certain transactions or activities.  NetCode will be used to authorise some purchases* on websites supported by MasterCard® SecureCode and Verified by Visa. These websites can be easily identified as they will display one or both, of the following logos.

NetCode offers greater security and convenience for online shopping by using a single-use one-time password, instead of having to remember a set password.

How does it work?

When finalising a purchase, you may be prompted to supply a password. NetCode then sends an instant, single-use password to your mobile phone or token device. This password is only valid for 30 seconds, and a new password is required for every purchase.

Do I need to register?

If you are already registered for NetCode for our online banking service NetBank, then you’re card is automatically registered for Secure Internet Shopping. You don’t need to do a thing.

Registering for NetCode, is quick, easy and free. Simply register for NetCode within NetBank.

  • Log on to NetBank
  • Go to the Security tab
  • Click on NetCode security

Not registered for NetBank? You can register online now. It takes just a few minutes to do and it’s free.

Tips for shopping online

Do you trust the website?

Only deal with merchants you trust, such as those with a reputable trading name or brand, or merchants you've previously purchased from by phone or in store.

Is the site secure?

Look for an HTTPS within the address bar or a padlock icon. This indicates that the merchant's site offers an encrypted line of communication to protect your details during the transaction.

Call ahead to check that the merchant exists

Call the merchant to verify their authenticity and check delivery and return policies.

Keep your receipts

Keep a record of your transactions in case you need to return or exchange an item.  This record should include the merchant’s internet address and order information.

Unauthorised use of your cards

If you find there has been unauthorised use of your debit or credit card, notify us immediately on 13 2221, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Always inform us if you change your details

To help us contact you in the event of suspicious activity on your credit card or debit card, ensure your details are kept up-to-date.  You can update your details in NetBank, at a branch, or by calling 13 2221.
