Commonwealth Bank unveils new awards feature … a travel one-stop-shop

The Commonwealth Bank today launched an innovative, convenient and easy to use travel service as an enhancement to its existing Commonwealth Awards program.
Travel Plus offers card-holders a travel one-stop-shop with customers able to pay via Awards points – credit card – or a combination of the two.
Payments using the Travel Plus service made with a Commonwealth Awards credit card also attract some of the most generous bonus points in the Australian credit card market.
Exclusive to Commonwealth Awards members, Travel Plus will allow customers to book any combination of travel related services including:
- Flights on over 150 domestic and international airlines
- Accommodation worldwide
- car hire worldwide
- holiday packages
- sightseeing tours and attractions
- travel insurance
Members of the general public who have received a Travel Plus gift card are also able to use the service.
According to the Group Executive for Retail Banking Services, Michael Cameron, Travel Plus is accessible both online and via telephone … giving Commonwealth Awards members an unmatched opportunity to purchase travel related services from hundreds of providers almost anywhere at anytime.
"You can book something as simple as a weekend in Melbourne or as complex as a two month package to Europe", Mr Cameron said.
"We’re also providing flexible customer friendly payment options.
"You can pay for your entire travel services with just points, with just a credit card or with any combination of points plus a credit card."
According to Mr Cameron, Travel Plus provides a new way of redeeming awards and is markedly different to the usual frequent flyer style programs presently offered in Australia.
"This is an exciting innovation to our Commonwealth Awards program and is aimed at making life easier for our customers," Mr Cameron said.
"Travel Plus is another tangible example of our commitment to providing excellent service to customers."
He said a generous bonus point scheme would apply to anyone purchasing travel related services through Travel Plus using a Commonwealth Awards credit card, with the Standard Card earning 2 points for every dollar spent, the Gold Card 3 points for every dollar spent and the Platinum Card 4 points for every dollar spent.
And there will be no surcharge for payments made using a credit card as is the case with some travel agents.
"Customers will have the option to search for discount flights and accommodation to spend as few Commonwealth Awards points as possible or alternatively use their credit card for travel and accumulate bonus points to use at a later date," Mr Cameron said.
Travel Plus also offers gift cards in amounts starting from $30 up to $1,200, giving members the option of selecting variable denominations when redeeming over the phone through the Commonwealth Awards Service Centre.
Travel Plus gift cards can be given to family or friends. They can then use the gift voucher to book and pay for their travel arrangements by calling the Commonwealth Awards Service Centre.
