26 April 2007

The Commonwealth Bank has announced it will donate $10 to children’s cancer research for each goal netted by every winning team throughout the entire 2007 Commonwealth Bank Trophy netball season.

The Commonwealth Bank Trophy is Australia’s elite women’s netball tournament and is contested by 8 teams nationally and concludes with a Final Series in August,

Barbara Chapman, Commonwealth Bank Group Executive of Human Resources and Group Services, said the money raised throughout the 2007 season will be donated to the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia, an organisation dedicated to research into the causes, cure, and prevention of childhood cancer.

"This initiative provides an opportunity to continue the Bank’s ongoing support of children’s cancer research and integrate it with our long-term support of Netball in Australia" said Ms Chapman.

Renay Ringma, Marketing Director from the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia is thrilled with the initiative as it extends a very important relationship.

"The Commonwealth Bank has been a generous supporter of Children’s Cancer Institute Australia for ten years."

"We’re delighted to be the chosen recipient of the Bank’s donation. This exciting and innovative idea takes our relationship one step further, bringing us closer to finding a cure for the 150 Australian children who this year, will tragically lose their battle with cancer."

Goal shooter and co-captain of Melbourne Phoenix, Sharelle McMahon is enthusiastic about the added challenge, saying "it’s always our aim to score as many goals as possible each game, and with this added incentive of contributing to such an important charity as children’s cancer research, we’ll be even more motivated to win."

"We wish the players and teams the very best in 2007 and hope that they can shoot as many goals as possible throughout the season" said Ms Chapman.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been the Naming Rights Sponsor of Netball Australia’s national domestic competition since its inception in 1997.

The Commonwealth Bank also continues to support grassroots community netball development through Commonwealth Bank clinics delivered in association with State and Territory Member Organisations throughout Australia.
