Commonwealth Bank switches off 1.4m lights during ‘Earth Hour’

26 March 2008

The Commonwealth Bank will switch off 1.4 million lights nationally as part of the Group’s commitment to Earth Hour 2008.

Poppy Fassos, Commonwealth Bank General Manager, Sponsorships, said since participating in the inaugural Earth Hour last year, the Bank has implemented a number of group wide initiatives to encourage greater awareness of reducing environmental impacts.

"The Bank recently announced that customers could reduce carbon emissions by switching off paper statements on more than 25 retail and business banking products including Streamline, NetBank Saver and Business Online Saver."

"To date, we have had a strong response from customers with a reduction of more than 1.3 million sheets of paper in just a few weeks," said Ms Fassos.

"Nationally our staff are embracing Earth Hour and the principals of building a sustainable business by reducing carbon emissions."

"Setting up double sided printing, purchasing recycled paper, implementing energy saving options on PCs and printers and committing to bank-wide recycling of paper, glass, plastic and tins were a number of popular Bank programs.

"We also continue to provide a widespread range of energy saving tips for staff which are accessible through the Bank’s intranet," said Ms Fassos.

Earth Hour will be on Saturday, 29 March 2008.
