Introducing new mobile banking innovations in Australia’s most popular digital wallet – CommBank Kaching

30 May 2013: Commonwealth Bank today unveiled two new mobile banking innovations to its two million mobile customers with the introduction of a BPAY QR  code reader and card PIN and activation functionality – now available on CommBank Kaching for iPhone.  The ability to set and change a card PIN through a mobile banking app marks the first of any of the major Australian banks.

  • With 75 per cent of Australians using BPAY, CommBank Kaching’s BPAY QR code reader will give Apple iPhone users a smarter way to pay their bills on the go.
  • Customers will also have the ability to set and change a card PIN and activate a card on the go – delivering CommBank customers a seamless experience across desktop and mobile banking platforms.

“As we continue to see more of our customers embrace mobile banking, we’ve worked hard to offer more simple and convenient banking solutions for our customers to manage their day to day financial needs,” said Drew Unsworth, General Manager, Online Banking, Commonwealth Bank.

“Today, it’s even easier to settle their bills anytime, anywhere and we’ve responded to our customers’ demands for a more convenient way to manage their card PIN and activations. Our customers can now enjoy unrivalled control over their everyday banking.”

The CommBank Kaching QR code reader will enable customers to quickly and easily pay bills via BPAY using the iPhone’s camera. Customers simply scan their QR biller code and the payment details will be automatically populated ready for payment.

FIRST BILLERS ANNOUNCED

Australian Power & Gas and Sydney Water are among the first billers to announce they will provide QR codes on bills, statements and notices that will enable payments to be accepted using the CommBank Kaching QR code reader, with many more billers expected to follow over the coming months.

With card PIN change and activations one of the most popular features on NetBank, iPhone (and soon Android) users will be able to do the same without ever having to leave CommBank Kaching, saving them a trip to the branch, calling the Bank or having to log on to their computers.

As with all new mobile banking innovations, security remains a priority for CommBank Kaching. Along with the usual 100% Security Guarantee on all transactions, customers will be protected by the same security systems that work to protect card PIN changes and activations in NetBank, requiring customers to have received the physical card before activating.
