Commonwealth Bank media release

Commonwealth Bank has been announced as a principal partner of the 2014 Bingham Cup, the biennial international gay rugby tournament, set to be hosted for the first time in Sydney next year.

One of the world’s largest non-professional international rugby tournaments, the 2014 Bingham Cup is expected to attract up to 40 competitive teams and thousands of players, supporters and visitors to Sydney in late August.

Commonwealth Bank Chief Executive Officer, Ian Narev, said he was proud the Group is a principal partner of the tournament.

“If Australia is going to achieve its very best in sport or business, we need to celebrate diversity. We are determined to take a leadership role in the communities in which we operate to create workplaces and supporting communities that inspire everyone to give their best by embracing gender, ethnic, disability, indigenous and LGBTI inclusiveness.

“We think the Bingham Cup is a fantastic event that really embraces the spirit of LGBTI inclusion. It is wonderful for Australia to have the opportunity to host the event next year.

“Our people and customers come from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. In 2012 we launched our LGBTI community and allies network, UNITY, which today represents and supports our people across all levels and teams across the Commonwealth Bank. This initiative, together with the Bingham Cup sponsorship, allows us to emphasise the importance of LGBTI inclusion both in business and in sport,” Mr Narev added.

Andrew Purchas, 2014 Bingham Cup Organising Committee President, welcomed Commonwealth Bank’s support.

"Our core aim of the Bingham Cup is to showcase that diversity builds stronger teams. Whether in sport or business, when people are given a fair go they can offer their best regardless of their sexuality.

“The support from Commonwealth Bank demonstrates that one of Australia’s largest organisations shares this view with us. By working together, we believe the tournament will be a catalyst for change in Australian society,” Mr Purchas said.

Both Commonwealth Bank and Bingham Cup Organising Committee are members of Pride in Diversity, Australia’s only not-for-profit workplace program designed to assist Australian employers with the inclusion of LGBTI employees.
