What is Google Pay and how does it work?

Google Pay is a free third party app that allows CommBank customers with a Mastercard debit or credit card to make tap and pay transactions. To make a payment, simply wake and hold your phone near the terminal. If the payment is successful you will see a blue check mark confirming the payment has been accepted.

Which devices are eligible for Google Pay?

Compatible Android phones that have operating system 4.4 (Kit Kat) and above with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

Which cards are eligible?

You can use any CommBank Mastercard debit or credit cards with Google Pay. To register a card, simply:

  • Download and install the Google Pay app
  • At the bottom right, tap the plus symbol to add a card
  • Use the camera to capture your card info or enter it yourself.
  • Accept the Terms and Conditions
  • Verify your Google Pay registration by entering the security code we send to your registered phone via SMS (ensure your mobile phone number is up-to-date).

Visit the Google Pay website for more information.

How secure are Google Pay transactions?

When making payments using Google Pay, your CommBank card number is not stored on your device or shared with merchants. Merchants will only see your Virtual Account Number, which is an alternative to your card number. It’s a way of protecting your card details so they aren’t exposed to anyone other than you.

If you suspect a fraudulent transaction has occurred on your account, please contact us on 13 2221 immediately. When it comes to payment security, CommBank is a leader in fraud protection. So if we identify any unusual activity, you’ll be alerted immediately.  And, if the unlikely happens and an unauthorised transaction occurs on your card, we’ll reimburse you 100%.1
