Here are 6 simple ways you can protect your bank details and minimise the risk of fraud or scams.
1. Keep track of your transactions
It’s really important to keep an eye on your bank accounts so you know exactly where your money’s going. You can do this in several ways:
- Check your bank accounts in the CommBank app or NetBank
- Turn Transaction notifications on in the CommBank app and we'll tell you instantly when you pay or are charged for something on your credit card, so you can see your spend as it happens
2. Protect your PIN
Whenever you get a new bank card make sure you activate it and set a PIN. That PIN helps protect your money so memorise the number rather than writing it down. Don’t share it with family or friends and never reveal it to anyone over the phone.
And we always recommend you cover the keypad as you’re entering your PIN at an ATM – you never know who is looking over your shoulder.
3. Change your password regularly
Password fatigue gets to us all but it’s really important to choose your banking password and PINs carefully and update them regularly, to keep your accounts secure.
Be creative, make it different to the ones you use for social media and avoid anything that's obvious like your name or date of birth which could leave you vulnerable to fraud.
Make sure you never tell anyone your password or PIN - even we don't ask for your password when you call or visit us in branch.
4. Protect your log on details
Occasionally third-party websites (or apps) may ask for your CommBank log on details. They may want to access your bank account to give you an aggregated view of your financial situation.
To ensure the safety of your account, we recommend that you don’t share your NetBank client number and password with third parties. It could put the security of your account at risk.
5. Swipe within eye-sight
Some shops and restaurants ask you to hand over your card so they can take it to a terminal out the back to tap or swipe to pay. It’s never advisable to do this, no matter how many years you’ve been going there. You should always watch while your card is swiped and ask for a receipt – even when a transaction’s been cancelled or failed to go through. This will help to keep your card details safe.
6. Tell us before you go overseas
If you’re heading overseas, log on to NetBank or the CommBank app to tell us when and where you're going.
We can keep an eye out for suspicious activity on your accounts and credit cards while you’re away. And while you’re away if you have to bank online using a shared computer, don’t tick ‘remember my details’ and always log out.
