Fast and secure online ID check

If you’re new to CommBank and applying for a credit card or opening a bank account online, we’ve made it quick and easy for you to complete a secure online ID check.

Once you apply, you will need to provide a form of ID for us to verify. The following ID’s are accepted:

  • Australian State or Territory driver's licence
  • Medicare card
  • Australian Passport
  • Australian birth certificate  

We will verify your personal information with external agencies to confirm that the information provided matches their records. This will involve checking the following ID details electronically in real time:

  • Your name as it appears on the ID
  • Card or document number (for driver's licences)
  • Where the ID was issued
  • When the ID expires

If we can’t verify your first ID, we may ask you to provide us with another ID. Once the check is successful, your application can immediately progress.  Provided no other checks are required, you’ll have access to your new bank account in NetBank – all set up ready to use, or you will be able to finalise your card application.

In the event we cannot identify you online, you will need to visit a branch with your ID to complete the verification process.

We verify the identity of everyone who opens an account with us online or in branch. We are required by law to check you are who you say you are and also verify certain personal details before we can provide you with financial services.
