Critical Illness Cover can pay a lump sum benefit to you if you’re diagnosed with or suffer a defined critical illness like cancer, stroke or major heart problems, such as a heart attack or coronary artery disease requiring by-pass surgery, and you survive for 30 days after this occurring. It’s designed to help with out of pocket costs like medical bills and lifestyle expenses, such as relocation costs for your family while you’re under medical care.
With a Simple Life policy, you can buy between $30,000 and $200,000 of Critical Illness Cover, in $10,000 increments. For example, you can buy $80,000 worth of Critical Illness Cover, but you can’t buy $75,000 worth. The cover amount you choose is known as your Critical Illness Cover benefit and is stated on your policy schedule. This lump sum benefit will be paid once only.
Critical illness means a medical practitioner has certified you’ve been diagnosed with or have suffered one of four medical conditions:
- Coronary artery disease, requiring by-pass surgery
- Heart attack
You can find more information on these medical conditions in the Simple Life Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
It’s important you’re aware of the situations where a Critical Illness benefit won’t be paid. This is where your critical illness results directly or indirectly from any of the following:
- A pre-existing condition
- Suicide, attempted suicide or self-inflicted injury, whether you’re sane or not
- As a result of war, whether it has been declared or not
- Substance use or dependency, including alcohol, drug, chemical or the improper use of medication
- Participation in an illegal activity
- Working in hazardous conditions
- If you pass away within 30 days of being diagnosed with or suffering a critical illness
- If you’ve been living outside of Australia for more than 12 months in a row
Critical Illness Cover has a 90 day no claim period, which means you can’t access benefits for any critical illness you suffer or are diagnosed with in the 90 days after your cover start date. Your cover start date is specified on your policy schedule.
