What you need to apply for a personal loan

It’s quick & easy to apply online

Whether you’re applying for a Fixed Rate Personal Loan, a Variable Rate Personal Loan or a Secured Car Loan, you’ll need to:

  • Have a good credit rating, and
  • Hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency
  • Are not currently an undischarged bankrupt
  • Have an Australian address


You may also need to supply the below:

Proof of Income

Unless your salary is paid into your Commonwealth Bank account you will need to provide:

  • Two most recent payslips, or if you are self employed your last two years’ tax return/financial statement and your last Tax Assessment Notice.


If you have savings, loans or credit cards with other financial institutions, you will need to provide:

  • Your most recent bank statement covering at least one month if you’ve held a Commonwealth Bank account with us for more than six months, or;
  • The most recent bank statement(s) covering at least three months if you’ve held a Commonwealth Bank account with us for less than six months.


Extra things new customers need 

If you’re not an existing Commonwealth Bank customer you’ll need to provide personal ID such as:

One of the following documents which contains your photo

  • Passport
  • Australian Drivers / Firearms licence
  • Proof of Age card


Or two different documents from this list

  • Birth Certificate
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • Pension Card or Health Care Card
  • Council rates or utility bill or Australian Taxation Office assessment notice or overseas drivers licence (only one of these documents may be used)


Secured Car Loans

You will also need to supply all of the below prior to funding if you are applying for a Secured Car Loan:

Comprehensive car insurance policy document.

This must be organised and paid for prior to the purchase of the car, and you need to specify the Commonwealth Bank as the financier of the motor vehicle when taking out the insurance

If you are buying from a Dealer, obtain a Dealer tax invoice from the dealer that includes the below:

  • Car registration number
  • VIN (Vehicle ID number) or Chassis number
  • Engine number
  • Purchase price of the car
  • Dealers name, contact details (phone number and address) Bank details (BSB and account number)
  • Or send them this Dealer Tax Invoice request Form (Pdf)

If you are buying from a private seller, obtain a Seller tax invoice from the seller that includes the below:

  • Car registration number
  • VIN (Vehicle ID number) or Chassis number
  • Engine number
  • Purchase price of the car
  • Copy of the registration papers showing the sellers name
  • Sellers contact details (phone number and address)
  • Or complete this Private Sales Invoice Form (Pdf) with the seller
