Can I access my super before retirement?

See all Superannuation FAQs

Last updated 12 August 2015

Accessing your super before you retire is only allowed in very limited circumstances, such as:

  • severe financial hardship
  • certain compassionate grounds
  • a terminal medical condition
  • permanent or temporary incapacity.

Keep in mind that the Trustee of the fund will determine whether or not to release your super benefits in accordance with the Fund’s Trust Deed.

Applications for release of benefits on compassionate grounds must be referred to the Department of Human Services (DHS). For more information on DHS visit the DHS website.

If you legitimately need some of your preserved super earlier from your Commonwealth superannuation policy, you can download the 'Early Release of Benefits Form' or please call 13 2015 between 8.30am and 6pm (Sydney time), Monday to Friday.
