What to do if your property is impacted by a disaster

Insurance might be the last thing on your mind while your home and its contents are under threat from extreme weather such as storm, fire or flood. This list* can help you make any claims down the track:

DO:

  • Safety is the priority; don’t do anything that puts anyone at risk
  • Only return or access your property when emergency services have confirmed it is safe to do so
  • Contact your insurance company at a safe time
  • Take photos of the damage and any damaged items before cleaning
  • Make a list of damaged items, including a detailed description, e.g. brand, model, serial number
  • Seek authorisation in writing from your insurer before authorising any building work, including emergency repairs. Any unauthorised work may not be covered by your policy
  • Let your insurer know if your roof is damaged

Don't:

  • Don’t turn on the electricity if your home has water damage, until it’s inspected by an electrician
  • Don’t drive your vehicle if it has water damage
  • Don’t throw away damaged belongings that could potentially be repaired, unless they pose a health risk
