Australian Financial Literacy Assessment

The AFLA program has provided the Commonwealth Bank Foundation with a valuable insight into the financial literacy levels of Australian students since it first began in 2005. Due to the changing assessment landscape in schools and subsequent drop in participation numbers over the past year, we have decided to wind up the program.

The Commonwealth Bank Foundation has been developing and delivering its own education programs to build financial literacy skills since 2003. We have developed an award winning StartSmart Secondary Schools program with the aid of AFLA findings which is delivered in schools across Australia, and this year we have expanded the program to include Primary Schools. The Foundation will continue to reach more young people than ever before through delivering our educational and engaging programs to thousands of Australian students each year.

The Australian Financial Literacy Assessment (AFLA) was a tool for teachers to develop and assess students’ skills in financial literacy and to identify students’ individual financial literacy strengths and weaknesses.

The assessment was designed to help schools measure students’ learning, competency and understanding of financial literacy and identify improvements in these areas over time. It was made available for the first time in 2005 through to 2008 at no cost to students in Years 9-10 throughout Australia.

AFLA was developed by Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), part of the University of New South Wales. EAA is a respected provider of quality educational measurement and assessment services in Australia.
