The Commonwealth Bank has been a major supporter of the Australian of the Year Awards since 1979 and is proud to be involved in recognising great Australians who have made an outstanding contribution within their community. As a key part of local Australian communities, the Commonwealth Bank understands how valuable the contributions of everyday Australians are both locally and further a field.

Every year we have the opportunity to recognise those who inspire us. If you admire someone for their dedication and determination in making a difference to our lives, please nominate them for an Australian of the Year award.

There are four categories for the award

• Australian of The Year
• Senior Australian of the Year (60 years and over)
• Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30 years old)
• Local Hero

About the program

The official nomination period is open during July and August. State winners are announced during an awards ceremony in November and the program culminates in the announcement of the National Award recipients by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd on the eve of Australia Day in Canberra.
