Aussie shares dip as banks and retail stocks drag

Australia's share market has started the week on the back foot as investor concerns about the economic outlook weigh on banks and consumer discretionary stocks.

Banks and retailers weigh on the market

Investors remain apprehensive about Australia's consumer retail environment after JB Hi-Fi shares were hammered despite posting a solid full-year profit.

The S&P/ASX200 fell 42 points on Monday, down 0.46%, to 9,073.2. The broader All Ordinaries lost 34.2 points, or 0.37%, to 9,279.

Energy and the raw materials were the only sectors to end the session convincingly higher as commodity prices advanced. Banks and consumer cyclical stocks dragged the exchange lower.

Dollar at 12-week high

The Australian dollar is trading at its highest price in 12 weeks, buying 71.15 US cents, up from 70.68 US cents on Friday at 5pm AEST.
