Australia's share market has clawed its way back from its worst day in nearly six months, but inflation and interest rate worries still have traders on edge.

The S&P/ASX200 pared a nearly 169 point plummet to end Thursday 92 points lower, down 1.03 per cent to 8,819.4, as the broader All Ordinaries lost 94.6 points, or 1.04 per cent, to 9,008.3.

Brent crude eased after surging to almost $US102 a barrel on US-Iran conflict escalation, while traders also de-risked ahead of key US inflation data due overnight on Thursday and Friday.

Closer to home, interest rate expectations continued to rise, with markets now putting a September hike at a 72 per cent chance, as a benchmark rate used for Australian business loans hit multi-year highs.

The Australian dollar is buying 72.20 US cents, down from 72.33 US cents on Wednesday at 5pm.
