ASX closes higher after up and down day

Energy and mining stocks lifted Australian shares after after Wall Street fell overnight.

Australia's sharemarket has ended the day slightly higher after see-sawing during the session, buoyed by strength in energy stocks and miners.

The S&P/ASX200 gained 12.6 points on Tuesday, up 0.15 per cent, to 8,577.8, as the broader All Ordinaries rose 9.2 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 8,875.3.

Energy and raw materials stocks led five of 11 local sectors higher, while IT stocks sold off, dropping 1.4 per cent.

The Australian dollar is buying 65.49 US cents, up slightly from 65.44 US cents at Monday's ASX close.
