Buyers return after a rocky week

Australian shares have defied a heavy sell-off to clock a third straight week of gains, thanks in part to rebounding technology and mining stocks.

The S&P/ASX200 gained 87 points on Friday, up 1 per cent, to 8806.7, as the broader All Ordinaries rose 100 points, or 1.13 per cent, to 8940.4.

Dip-buying in beaten-down technology and mining stocks drove the share market higher on Friday after concerns about artificial intelligence valuations and global growth sparked selling earlier in the week.

Australian dollar slips

The Australian dollar is buying 69.47 US cents, down from 69.51 US cents on Thursday at 5pm AEDT.
