Towards net zero

As Australia’s largest bank, CBA has a role to play supporting Australia’s transition to net zero by 2050.

Achieving the national goal calls for a purposeful, coordinated and inclusive response, which brings challenges as well as immense opportunity.

In addition to taking action on our part, which you can read about in our 2023 Climate Report, we are heartened and encouraged by the individual and collective steps being taking by our customers and partners, large and small, towards Australia’s net zero future. These are some of their stories.

Green Building Council of Australia and CommBank: Creating sustainable workplaces

May 2024

“Globally, 37 per cent of all emissions come from the built environment. If we’re going to make this change [toward net zero], it needs to happen in our homes, our shopping centres and our office buildings where we live, work and play, “says Green Building Council of Australia CEO Davina Rooney.

In this video Davina talks to Jennifer Saiz, CommBank Executive General Manager Group Corporate Services, about the bank’s workplace sustainability ambition and how reusing and recycling materials helped achieved embodied carbon reductions of over 30 percent in the recent refurbishment of CommBank’s head office in Sydney.

Hallett Group aims to innovate and decarbonise Australia’s cement and concrete industry

September 2023

“The world cannot decarbonise without cement and concrete. Every wind farm, solar farm, battery and hydro plant is built on foundations made of concrete. But, almost 8 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions comes from cement,” says Hallett Group CEO, Kane Salisbury.

In this video, Kane explains how Hallett Group is repurposing industrial waste by-products to produce lower-emissions cement and the investment it’s making to develop its onshore manufacturing capabilities.”

Team Global Express: The future of sustainable freight

July 2023

Team Global Express wants to be known as "the most sustainable logistics company in Australia", according to CEO Christine Holgate — who acknowledges this is a challenging ambition in a country the size of Australia, without existing electrical or hydrogen-charging infrastructure for vehicles.

In this video, she talks to CommBank's Deborah Leerhsen about the long road to achieving net zero, and what Team Global Express has already started doing. "If you don't take that first step, how are you going to get to the top of the mountain?" Ms Holgate says.

Amber: The lucky country

May 2023

"Power from wind and solar is by far the cheapest way to generate power we've ever had in our lifetimes, as well as being zero carbon," says Chris Thompson, co-founder and co-CEO of Amber. As Australia moves towards an energy grid powered by renewables, the way Australians pay for electricity is also changing.

In this video, Chris explains how Australian households are uniquely placed to take advantage of renewable power — and how Amber customers can shift their energy usage to times of the day when renewables are abundant to save money.

Edify Energy: Producing cheaper, cleaner energy

June 2023

How will decarbonising the grid affect electricity prices for Australian households? What role will batteries and hydrogen play? John Cole, CEO and founder of Edify Energy, talks about the future of Australia’s energy with CommBank’s Executive Director of Natural Resources and Energy, Neil Fraser.

“We've got abundant resources, we can electrify ourselves and the industry. We don't need to import energy. We can be a net energy exporter to countries that need their clean energy imported," says Mr Cole.

Newcastle Airport: Take-off to sustainability

May 2023

The journey to sustainability is about taking small steps that, over time, reach a big goal. That’s according to Dr Peter Cock, the CEO of Newcastle Airport – which recently reached “Level 4 – Transformation status” in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, overseen by the international trade association Airports Council International.

In this video, Dr Cock outlines the many steps the airport is taking to reduce its environmental footprint, and how the aviation industry will adapt to the changes ahead. “It’s a journey we just have to start on – we might not know where the end is, but the important bit is starting to work on it,” he says.
