In her 80s, Ms Beng Goh has been a loyal customer at CommBank for 48 years and is a familiar face at her local Sunnybank branch.

“We have great relationships, I know almost everyone at the branch,” said Ms Goh.

She’s even become a fixture at their Staying Safe Online seminars, which the Sunnybank team hosts in both English and Mandarin to support their diverse local community.

The free in-person sessions are designed to help the community recognise, avoid, and respond to scams and online threats.

Beng has attended every session the branch has offered.

“You know why I came again? Because I know the dangers of scams. I am quite savvy, but every time I come to a seminar, I learn something new,” she shared.

Many residents in the Sunnybank area come from a Mandarin-speaking background. To ensure all members of the community are informed and confident, the branch took the initiative to offer the sessions in Mandarin as well.

Sunnybank’s Customer Banking Specialist, Yulong Li is responsible for translating the seminars and said, “It’s particularly helpful after the sessions. Customers feel comfortable asking me questions in Mandarin. I’m happy to pass on this information. I’m glad they learn something new and take something away.”

Branch Manager, Jenny Scott says the seminars reflect the branch’s role as a trusted partner in the local community.

“It makes me so proud we can give back to the community this way. It’s one way we can help the community and our customers. We deal with victims of scams on a near-daily basis, so it is important we run these sessions,” Ms Scott said.

Ms Goh is a big part of this community and has become one of the program’s biggest advocates.

“Whenever I can, I tell my friends about Commonwealth Bank. All these people do a good job, they’re not pushy,” said Ms Goh.
