CommBank reinforced its focus on helping to increase women’s participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields, like AI and cyber security, through its partnership with Vogue Codes.
CommBank Chief People Officer Kiersten Robinson emphasised how this event is helping to challenge industry stereotypes.
"Events like Vogue Codes are important because they are helping to challenge stereotypes about who can be successful in tech. They amplify voices, bring together people to connect and importantly talk about the impact that we can all make through technology like AI," she said.
How to make the switch to tech careers
CommBank used the Vogue Codes platform to highlight that it’s never too late to explore a career in AI and technology related domains.
CommBank Data Scientist Laura Moore transitioned from vet science to data science, reinforcing that different career backgrounds can bring different perspectives into the mix.
“There are so many ways to learn about the AI space, and so many different areas to contribute to in AI - so it's worth investigating to see what interests you. It’s so important to encourage more diversity in AI and technology careers,” says Laura.
The right mindset and a willingness to learn new things can also accelerate a pivot into AI careers. Vicky Lam transitioned from Human Resources (HR) to a career in data science.
“When I began my career at CommBank, I got a front row seat to the growing field of data and AI, and I was lucky enough to be part of the bank's first ever re-skilling program focused on data analytics. This opened doors to exciting roles across the tech space, from building customer loyalty platforms like CommBank Yello to now working in Data Science and AI. It's been a wild ride full of learning, and amazing mentors and colleagues,” says Vicky.
CommBank’s innovation and tech community leader Sabina Streatfeild spoke at Vogue Codes about why now is the time to explore the jobs of tomorrow.
“There’s growing demand for tech skills in Australia particularly in areas of cyber, data science and engineering. The roles of the future we see are things like engineering, product management, and AI. The opportunity this is presenting for the future workforce, as well as career changes, is incredibly exciting,” she says.
Through our sponsorship of Vogue Codes, CommBank continues to champion women to consider a career in tech by spotlighting the voices and stories of some women who are leading the way in AI, cyber and other tech related fields.
