CommBank engineers will have the opportunity to participate in Anthropic's new Claude Frontier Academy, created to boost enterprise AI skills.
The inaugural Frontier Deployed Engineer (FDE) Residency is the first program under the Academy. It is a selective program designed to develop advanced AI skills through hands-on immersive learning, practical problem-solving and ongoing mentorship.
Hands-on learning at the frontier
It will bring together engineers from leading organisations to work through complex enterprise AI challenges and build the skills needed to deploy AI safely and effectively at scale. The FDE Residency’s first intakes will take place in San Francisco, New York and London in October and November 2026.
For CommBank engineers, the program offers an opportunity to step outside their day-to-day roles and work alongside a global community of AI practitioners at the frontier. As part of the program, an initial group of twenty CommBank engineers will take part in a four-day intensive, working through simulated enterprise deployments and taking AI systems from customer requirements and solution design through to testing, security review, compliance and production deployment. These engineers will then continue into the 12-week residency with more CommBank engineers taking part as the program expands.
Bringing frontier AI skills into the bank
Steve Corfield, Global Head of Business Development and Partnerships at Anthropic, said the organisations seeing the greatest impact from AI are combining frontier AI expertise with deep knowledge of their own business, customers and technology environment
“Claude Frontier Academy’s FDE Residency is designed to bring those worlds together. It is built for top engineering talent, and CommBank is sending some of its strongest engineers. They will develop frontier skills alongside top engineers from other leading organisations and Anthropic’s own FDEs, then apply them inside the bank. We’re excited to welcome CommBank engineers into the first cohorts and to help build the practical skills needed to deploy AI safely, effectively and at scale.”
Building deep technical capability
Rodrigo Castillo, Chief Technology Officer at CommBank, said the bank’s participation in the program reflects the importance of investing in deep technical capability as AI becomes central to delivering better experiences for customers.
"AI-powered engineering is transforming the way we build, deliver and innovate for our customers. The program gives our engineers an opportunity to learn directly from practitioners working at the frontier of AI and bring those valuable insights and experiences back to CommBank,” he said.
"As AI becomes increasingly embedded in the way we operate, continuing to build deep technical capability is essential to deploying these technologies responsibly, securely and safely at scale."
Investing in engineering excellence
The opportunity builds on CommBank's ongoing investment in engineering excellence and AI capability, including Technology Hubs in Seattle and San Francisco that provide technologists with learning opportunities alongside leading technology and frontier AI companies.
