Employee giving

At CommBank, our people are committed to driving positive change within their communities to create a better society for all Australians.

We have a long history of employee giving. In 1917, through the generous donations of our people, we sent care packages to Australians fighting in the First World War. When the war ended, our people continued their fundraising efforts, buying cots for children in hospital.

In the decades that followed, the giving continued to grow, with hundreds of thousands of young people in need provided with care and support.

Today, our people are building upon the legacy created over the last century. Through our people’s charity, CommBank Foundation, we remain committed to supporting the wellbeing of the Australian community.

Celebrating a centenary of giving

To celebrate CommBank Foundation’s Centenary of Giving, and to recognise the immense contributions our people continue to make to their local communities, Commonwealth Bank partnered with CommBank Foundation to donate $10 million to community organisations.

Right across Australia, our people gifted over 1000 Centenary Grants valued at $10,000 each to community organisations that support youth wellbeing, access to education and cancer research and awareness

Community Grants

Community Grants is our Workplace Giving program. Over 13,500 CommBank employees make regular fortnightly contributions to the program to support the wellbeing of Australian youth. Since 2007, we've awarded more than $20 million in Community Grants to 1,730 organisations nationwide, supporting a range of youth programs focused on education, wellbeing and social inclusion.

Community Grants has three categories:

  • National Grant: Our people chose one organisation with national reach to receive our National Grant. The grant includes $400,000 a year for three years and our people support a major annual fundraiser for the charity.
  • State and Territory Grants: Our people in each state and territory select, via vote, an organisation that they will support with a grant ranging from $50,000 a year to $100,000 a year for a period of three years.
  • Grassroots Grants: Over $2m a year is awarded in grants of up to $10,000 to organisations delivering crucial programs in local communities across Australia. All Grassroots Grants are awarded for a three year period.

Recognising the impact achieved through the program, Commonwealth Bank also makes an employer contribution to the program of $2 million each year.

All Community Grants are awarded for a period of three years to support the financial sustainability of community organisations so they can deliver crucial programs over the longer term.

Can4Cancer

Can4Cancer’s purpose is to change lives and end cancer. Established in 2014, it is an initiative run in partnership with Tour de Cure that aims to raise more than $2 million annually to support cancer research and awareness.

Can4Cancer began as a 3-day ride for 100 employees in Sydney back in 2014. Today, over 3000 CommBank employees participate in fundraising activities including a signature 3 day ride; half-marathon walks in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth. We also organise events throughout our branches across Australia.

Can4Cancer works closely with TdC’s Research, Support and Prevention (RSP) Committee to identify research projects to fund each year in the following categories:

  • Research Grants: Each year, we provide research grants of up to $200,000 each. In recognising that many of our people have been impacted personally by cancer, our people decide, via vote, on the cancer types we will help combat each year. Once the cancer types have been determined, we work closely with the RSP Committee to identify the research projects Can4Cancer will fund. 
  • On-tour Grants: On tour, we provide grants of $10,000 each to cancer support projects that make a big difference to the local community we are in.
  • Awareness packs: On weekdays during the tour, we also visit local primary schools where CommBank employees share Tour de Cure’s Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy cancer awareness message. We give all children a kid’s pack containing an educational book, fridge magnets, a pencil case, and other goodies.

1 in 3 cancers are preventable with healthy lifestyle choices. Can4Cancer actively promotes a cancer smart lifestyle and encourages our people to adopt healthy lifestyle changes as the first line of defence.
