Customise ChatGPT to make the most of AI for your business

  • The personalisation function in ChatGPT makes responses more targeted to your specific business needs.
  • Customising your AI agent can be managed in just a few minutes and only requires access to the free version of ChatGPT.
  • To secure the best AI responses for business, verify what ChatGPT understands about your business after you’ve customised it then refine if necessary.

Q: Do I need to pay to personalise ChatGPT for business?

A: Customising ChatGPT is one of the most efficient AI tools available to business owners – and you can use it with a free account or a paid subscription. The benefits of a paid account, however, include access to more advanced tools and elevated usage limits.

Using ChatGPT to help with time-consuming admin tasks is effective but there is one clear way to improve your experience: personalise it for your business. Doing this gives ChatGPT a baseline – it provides the tool with key details to remember so you don’t have to start from scratch with every new prompt. Better yet, it only takes a few minutes to get it up and running.

Your 3-step ChatGPT for business personalisation guide

Step 1: Find the customisation settings

Log into ChatGPT and navigate to the settings menu. To locate it, click on your initials at the bottom of the left-hand side column. A pop-up menu will appear. From there, navigate to “Personalization”.

Step 2:  Add your details to the AI tool for business

You can tailor the style and tone of the responses you receive – for example, you might prefer professional, polished answers or warm and chatty responses. You can also tell ChatGPT if you want emojis, subheads and how detailed you want the responses.

The game-changing section is what comes next: “Custom Instructions”. Introduce details about you and your business. Michael Shafran from Sydney’s Brooklyn Boy Bagels crafted this outline for his business:

“I run a bagel wholesaler and two bagel cafés in Sydney. Target audience: professional Sydneysiders including young adults and families. Tone: casual and professional with New York swagger."

“Rule: always use Australian English (e.g., ‘organise’ not ‘organize’). No corporate jargon. Need content for eDMs and Instagram reels.”

Michael shares that the benefits of this service have been considerable. “I’ve been surprised by how much time this has saved me,” he says.

“Telling ChatGPT essential details like where I operate and that I have cafés and wholesale products, means I don’t have to re-explain my business model every time I start a new chat. It already knows my story so I can jump straight in.”

Step 3: Save the settings

There are two final steps to take if you want the best AI for business experience. If you choose to use Memory, review your Memory and data-control settings first, and avoid adding sensitive customer, financial, employee or confidential business information unless you understand how those settings apply. ChatGPT’s memory builds over time and having these settings on means it can remember useful details you’ve shared about your business.

As is always the case with AI, you need to check that ChatGPT has correctly interpreted the information you’ve added. Type this prompt in the search bar: “What do you know about my business?” You should get a clear summary of your business, goals, preferred tone and any clear rules you’ve set, such as spelling preferences. If anything doesn’t look right, go back and refine the info you added in the customisation field.

That’s it – after five minutes of work, you’re all set up to get faster ChatGPT responses that are targeted for your business.

3 prompts to try today

Now you’ve customised ChatGPT, try these prompts:

  • “What information should I add to ChatGPT so it better understands my business?”
  • "Help me write Custom Instructions for my business.”
  • “Based on my business type, what repetitive admin tasks could ChatGPT help automate or streamline?”

Congratulations, you’ve completed this lesson!
