Sick kids need special treatment and the amazing Clown Doctors offer some of the best medicine around – laughter.
Clown Doctors are specially trained performers who visit children’s wards, but parents, siblings, and hospital staff can all benefit from a good dose of the giggles. It is part of the core program of The Humour Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that provides medical clowns to visit and entertain sick kids in hospital.
Each year the Clown Doctors do the rounds in 24 hospitals throughout Australia. They visit more than 210,000 children, bringing a bit of fun and spreading smiles and laughter.
As a founding partner, we’ve supported the Clown Doctors since 1999. Through our Staff Community Fund, our employees give more than $400,000 to Clown Doctors each year. In addition, customers help us to help Clown Doctors deliver more fun by donating at our branches and online.
We support Clown Doctors because they play such an important role in the community. While we all hope our kids will be healthy and well, sometimes circumstances mean a visit to the hospital. A smile and a big red nose peeking around a door can be a welcome relief for a child during a stay in hospital.
It’s certainly a different type of treatment that can help reduce stress or boredom, as well as lift a patient’s mood and boost coping strategies.
