If you or one of your family members falls seriously ill, it can impact all areas of your life. There are a few things to do to ensure that you’re getting all the financial support and help you need to get through this tough time.
Speak to your employer
You may be entitled to sick leave or carers leave, depending on whether it is yourself or someone else in the family that is sick. Ask your employer what it is they can offer and check it against what is legally required by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Claim any available insurance
Depending on your cover, there are several types of insurance that you may be able to claim to help cover costs. If you have any of the following make a claim as soon as possible as it could take a while for your claim to be paid:
- Health insurance
- Total and permanent disability insurance
- Trauma cover
- Income protection.
Set yourself up on one income
If the person that has fallen sick is one of the principal income earners you may need to make some changes to ensure that you’re able to manage on a revised budget. See our guide to managing on one income.
If things become tough, speak to your finance providers and billers so that they know what’s happening. They may be able to help you by making alterations to your current arrangements. The government also offers free financial counselling services.
