The Risk Rhetoric: driving change for the better

A self-described open book, Chithroobi, Executive Manager, Operational Risk Retail Banking Services, isn’t shy in admitting why she took a role at CommBank just under a year ago.

“When the APRA report was released last year, you could start to see the rhetoric around risk change. CommBank is leading that change, and it’s a great opportunity for any risk professional. I wanted to be involved with driving that change. It was an obvious choice.”

Working as a Line 2 risk professional, Chithroobi’s role is aligned to a specific area of our business, and provides independent risk advice and guidance. The role of Line 2 is to understand the business and the risk frameworks and to help guide the business to make better decisions to ensure the best customer outcomes.

“My team and I look after Everyday Banking, Consumer Finance and Retail Wealth lines of business within our Retail Bank. We review issues, incidents, controls, as well as other elements of the operational risk management framework. Being business aligned means we understand the challenges the Retail Business faces – and we’re able to offer valuable insights and solutions.”

Chithroobi says she feels incredibly supported by the leaders of the organisation, and enjoys the variety and pace of her role.

“There is a real commitment from leadership all the way through our organisation to build a simpler, better bank. We know that risk is central to our strategy. Given the organisation’s focus on risk, I’ve had to learn quickly, be agile and reprioritise regularly. I’ve been given the room to grow and learn as I go – a reflection of the culture here.”

As a mother of two school aged children, Chithroobi says that her biggest priority is balancing the role with the needs of her family.

“At CommBank, flexibility is embedded in how we work. I work four days a week and if I have a commitment for my children then I might start late or finish early. Ultimately I’m empowered to organise my working week around the needs of my family.”
