Opening a bank account with CommBank is simple, and most accounts can be opened online. Whether you're looking for an everyday account or a savings account, you can get started in a way that suits you.

Step 1: Choose the right bank account

Start by selecting a bank account that matches how you plan to use it, for everyday spending, saving money, or managing your finances online. Each CommBank bank account comes with digital banking access, including the CommBank app and NetBank.

Step 2: Apply online or in branch

Most personal bank accounts can be opened online, without visiting a branch. If you prefer face‑to‑face help, you can also open an account at your local CommBank branch.

When applying online, you’ll typically need:

  • Your personal details
  • An Australian residential address
  • A valid form of identification

Step 3: Verify your identity

For security reasons, we’ll need to confirm your identity. This can often be done digitally during the application process, or in branch if required.

Step 4: Start banking

Once your bank account is open, you can:

  • Access your account through NetBank and the CommBank app
  • Set up payments, transfers and savings goals
  • Receive and activate your debit card (if applicable)
  • Open additional accounts or discover other products that may suit you
