Children aged 9 and over may be able to receive a Debit Mastercard, so they can practise budgeting and paying for things with their own money.
As their parent or legal guardian, you can set and update their weekly spend limit. You can also lock card access to stop card transactions from their Smart Access Account for Youth.
You and your child can view and manage card security settings together, helping them learn with a safety net.
$0 monthly account fee and no withdrawal fees when using CommBank or Bankwest ATMs. That means more of your child’s money can go towards saving or spending.

Important: These card security settings are shared. That means your child may be able to change them in their own CommBank app. If you change or lock a setting, it’s a good idea to talk it through with your child so you both know what’s in place.

Children under 14 will need a parent or legal guardian to open a Smart Access Account for Youth on their behalf.
14 or over
If you’re aged 14 or over, you can apply for an individual Everyday Account Smart Access yourself online or in-branch.

If you’re a parent or legal guardian and don't already bank with us, you’ll also need at least 1 form of physical ID handy e.g. Driver licence, passport, Medicare card or birth certificate. If you’re over 18, you must use an Australian driver licence or an Australian or foreign passport.
You'll need to provide a physical ID for verification for yourself and your child within 20 days of opening the account. If ID isn’t verified in time, the account may automatically close and you may need to reapply at a CommBank branch.

1 Locks don’t apply to transactions that are flagged as recurring (e.g. direct debits) and transactions not sent to us for authorisation.
