How it works

Before opening a CommSec International Shares account for your SMSF, you'll need a CommSec Australian Shares account under your SMSF.

Once you've opened a CommSec International Shares account for your SMSF, you'll need to fund your International Wallet (included with the account) before you can trade.

Don't have a CommSec Australian Shares account for your SMSF?

To open a CommSec Australian Shares account for your SMSF online, you'll need:

  • Your SMSF name, Australian Business Number (ABN) and Tax File Number (TFN)
  • Your company name, business address and Australian Company Number (ACN) if you have a company trustee
  • Full names, contact details and date of birth for all trustees or directors
  • A valid, non-expired photo ID (e.g., Australian Driver's Licence, Passport or Medicare card) for each trustee or director

Once you've opened a CommSec Australian Shares account for your SMSF, you can open a CommSec International Shares account.

Note: By opening a CommSec Australian Shares account, you'll also open a CDIA for your SMSF.

Log on to CommSec and follow the prompts to open a CommSec International Shares account.

You'll also need the following to open an account:

  • Your CommSec credentials, such as your client ID and password
  • Your SMSF CDIA and Australian Share Trading Account details

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you'll need a CommSec Australian Shares account linked to a CDIA before you can open a CommSec International Shares account. Both CommSec Australian Shares account and CDIA needs to be held by your SMSF.

  • A CDIA is a cash management account that is linked to your SMSF CommSec trading accounts.
  • It acts as an investment wallet, allowing you to pay for or receive money from your trades. You can also receive SMSF contributions, pay expenses and facilitate drawdowns with your CDIA. A CDIA also provides you with discounted online brokerage and real-time fund transfers.
  • To open an International Shares trading account, you'll first need to open a CDIA and CommSec Australian Shares account under your SMSF.

With a CommSec International Shares Account, your SMSF can access 13 international markets including:

  • United States
  • Canada

Your international trades are funded by your International Wallet. Before placing your first trade, you'll need to transfer funds into your International Wallet.

To transfer funds to your International Wallet:

  1. Log on to CommSec app using either your CommSec or NetBank ID and password
  2. Tap Portfolio, then tap on your International Shares account
  3. Tap on Transfer funds
  4. Enter the amount you'd like to transfer in Australian Dollars (AUD)

You can use the CommSec app to trade, view and manage your SMSF CommSec International Shares account.

To view your SMSF accounts in the CommSec app, log on to your CommSec app (make sure you have the latest version) and tap Portfolio on the bottom of the screen to access your shares portfolio. 

  • W-8 forms are required to set up an International Shares account. This is a US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form that allows foreign investors to declare their tax residency, which may allow them to claim tax treaty benefits relevant to their country of residency, including a reduced rate of withholding tax.
  • Upon opening a CommSec International Shares Account, you will be prompted to complete a new W-8 form if your existing W-8 form is invalid or expired.
  • A valid form is required before placing your first international trade, even if you're not planning to trade in the US market.

2 The FX fee is charged per currency conversion. Currency conversions are automatically performed for each trade unless the Plus feature enabling the foreign currency wallet has been activated and there are sufficient funds in the local currency to settle the trade.
