All businesses must use SuperStream to pay employee superannuation guarantee contributions to super funds. With SuperStream, contributions and data are sent electronically in a standardised format.

Self managed super fund trustees must also be SuperStream compliant and ensure their fund is able to receive employer contributions and the associated data electronically by obtaining an Electronic Service Address (ESA).

The ATO has a list of accredited ESA providers, some of which are free and some that charge a fee. Below is a list of ATO accredited providers. If you use an SMSF administrator you may already have access to an ESA, so you should consider contacting your administrator. SuperStream is automatically included in the Commonwealth SMSF Administration Package.

Once you have registered for SuperStream, inform employers of your SMSF's ABN, bank account details and electronic service address.

Note:  SuperStream is not required when an SMSF does not receive any employer contributions, or the only employer contributions are from a related-party employer. For example, if you're an employee of your family business and your super guarantee contributions go to your SMSF, these contributions are exempt from the SuperStream standard.
