What's an Insured Event?

An Insured Event is an accidental, unexpected or unforeseen event your Home Insurance provides cover for.

Depending on the type of cover you have, and optional coverages selected, the Insured Events we cover include:

  • Accidental damageYou’re covered for loss or damage caused by an accident at your insured address. This is an optional cover*.
  • Accidental glass breakage – you’re covered for accidental breakage or fracture through the entire thickness of the item, such as a window or glass panels (additional covered items are outlined in the PDS).
  • Animal damage – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by an animal that enters any part of your building which is ordinarily fully enclosed.
  • Burning out of electric motors and power surge -  you’re covered for cost of repairing or replacing the motor of any electrical appliance that burns out, or any electrical appliance that is damaged by power surge from an identifiable and verifiable source.
  • Domestic workers’ compensation cover - This is an optional cover*.
  • Earthquake – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by an earthquake, and/or tsunami, landslide and/or subsidence which occurs within 72 hours of, and as a result of, an earthquake.
  • Escape of liquid – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by the sudden and unexpected escape of liquid, such as from water main, fixed water pipe, washing machine or dishwasher, sink, basin, bath, toilet, and fixed heating or cooling system (additional scenarios are outlined in the PDS).
  • Explosion – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by an explosion and/or landslide, and/or subsidence which occurs within 72 hours of, and as a result of, an explosion.
  • Fire – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by fire (including bushfire) and/or heat, smoke and/or soot as a result of fire (the state of burning that produces flame).
  • Floodyou’re covered for loss or damage caused by the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of any lake, or any river, creek or other natural watercourse, whether or not altered or modified, or any reservoir, canal or dam.
  • Legal liability – you’re covered for up to $20 million for damages, legal fees and disbursements, costs and expenses that you are legally liable to pay another person/s as a result of an incident that occurs at your insured address.
  • Lightning – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by a direct lightning strike, and/or a power surge at your insured address caused by a lightning strike.
  • Loss of rent extra – you’re covered for up to 16 weeks’ loss of rent, if your tenant has not paid any rent for at least 4 consecutive weeks. This is an optional cover*.
  • Malicious act, including vandalism – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by a malicious act including vandalism which you have reported to the police.
  • Malicious damage or theft by tenants – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by a malicious act or theft you have reported to the police. This is an optional cover*.
  • Portable contents cover – you’re covered for theft of, and/or accidental loss of or damage to your portable contents items which are  typically worn or carried away from the home. This is an optional cover*.
  • Riot and public disturbances – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by a riot or a public disturbance, which you have reported to the police.
  • Storm – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by a violent wind including a tornado or named cyclone, or rain, hail or snow of unusual volume, force or duration. It is not persistent bad weather, or heavy or persistent rain by itself.
  • Sudden impact – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by sudden impact, such as from any rail or road vehicle, aircraft, broken or collapsed communications, falling trees or branches (additional scenarios are outlined in the PDS).
  • Theft or attempted theft – you’re covered for loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft which you have reported to the police.

*If you have selected an optional cover and paid the additional premium it will be stated on your Certificate of Insurance.
