Our Graduate Program

Designed to attract the best and brightest, CommBank’s Graduate Program is a challenging and rewarding way to kick-start a long-term career with us.

How does our Graduate Program work?

You’ll start with us in mid-February as a permanent employee, but the length of your program varies based on which Business Area you choose.

Throughout your first year we provide loads of support to help you maximise your experience:

  • You’ll attend orientation in Sydney to hear from senior leaders and renowned speakers, immerse yourself in all things CommBank and network with fellow graduates.
  • We’ll help you identify focus areas, and provide tailored development sessions – on demand or in person.
  • Grads come together in Sydney again for an intensive mid-year development event to enhance your capabilities even further.

You’ll complete a rotational program to help you to learn about different parts of your business area. At the end of your program, you’ll be supported to find a role that best suits your capabilities and interests.

What can you expect?

Shine: Contribute from day one by working on real projects that impact our business and our customers, within Australia’s largest bank.

Develop: Participate in market-leading training to develop your technical and soft skills. This will help with the transition to full-time work from university and ensure you excel in your immediate and future roles.

Network: Build networks and friendships through unparalleled access to senior leaders, project leads and program sponsors, enhancing your personal and business profile.

Contribute: Give back to the community through graduate initiatives, driving positive change across our organisation and improving the wellbeing of our graduate cohort.

Key dates

Applications typically open in late February to early March, and the Program starts the following year mid-February. Check out the calendar of key dates to see where the team will be. This is updated seasonally in line with our activity.

We have roles available nationally (both metro and regional), although most roles are based in Sydney. Role locations are only available once applications open.

Application process & tips

You can apply for our Graduate Program online. If your initial application is successful, you’ll have the chance to complete some online assessments, a digital interview, and then possibly attend one of our virtual or face-to-face Assessment Centres to meet with our team. You will be asked to apply for only one business area in your application, and this is the role you’ll be considered for.

Our Summer Intern Program

How does the Summer Intern Program work?

Our 10-week Summer Intern Program gives you a taste of what it’s like to work with us. You’ll be given full support and training to help you decide if CommBank is the right fit for you.

At the end of the Program you’ll also have the opportunity to apply early for our Graduate Program for the following year. If successful, you’ll have secured your graduate role and take the pressure off job searching in your final year of study.

What can you expect?

You’ll enjoy an intensive introduction to life at CommBank, learn how we operate, get involved in great projects and meet inspirational people who’ll help you put your career on the right path.

During the placement you’ll be partnered alongside passionate and energetic leaders and teams, allowing you to work on challenging real-life projects. You’ll contribute to outcomes that positively impact our business and customers. During the placement we’ll encourage you to build your professional network with your peers and with leaders from across CommBank.

Responsibilities for each placement vary based on the team and role you’ll be working with. At the start of our placement, your leaders will work with you to determine a project, set of tasks or targets to achieve during your placement. They’ll consider both your current skills and development goals, as well as look for opportunities to stretch them to enhance your experience.

You’ll have the chance to build key transferrable skills on our award-winning development program through a combination of formal learning events and workplace-based experiential learning. This program is designed to support you to identify your strengths, and showcase them at the end of the placement.

About the programs

What does CommBank look for in graduates and summer interns?

We look for well-rounded candidates who have successfully balanced university, work experience and extra-curricular activities. Other skills essential to working successfully with us include being able to work in a team, the desire to learn and drive your own career. Most importantly, we look for your motivation to work in the financial services industry, and with us.

How many graduates and summer interns do you take each year?

Our Graduate Program generally takes around 150-250 graduates each year and our Summer Intern Program takes around 120-150 interns each year.

What are the start dates of the Programs and how long do they run for?

The Graduate Program starts in mid-February. The length of each Program varies depending on which business area you are interested in, but the majority of our Programs run for 18 months. As a graduate, you'll join the Program as a permanent employee.

The Summer Intern Program runs for 10 weeks from late November to early February. This includes a break period over the Christmas and New Year’s period.

What locations are you recruiting for?

The majority of our roles are based in Sydney. We do have a number of roles available in other cities and regional areas, generally across our Business Banking area. Specific locations of our roles will be available at time of application, and you will be asked about your location preference, and locations you would be open to relocating to.

Are the Programs available in any of CommBank’s international offices?

Our Programs are only available in Australia.

Application & recruitment process

I'm a temporary visa holder. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately temporary visa holders are not eligible. Applicants must have Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or Australian permanent residency at the time the application is submitted.

I will be finishing my studies shortly after the Graduate Program commences. Can I still apply?

All successful candidates must have completed their studies and be available to commence full time work in mid-February. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate late applicants and would suggest you apply for the following year's Graduate Program.

Can I apply for more than one business area?

You are only able to select one business area preference on your online application. To help you make this decision, we recommend you read about our different business areas in detail before applying. If we read your application and think you’re a perfect fit for another area, we’ll give you a call to have a chat.

When will you be visiting my university?

Please check the events and key dates section to find out when we’ll be visiting your university and running events – either face-to-face or virtually.

What is the recruitment process?

Find out more about our application process, including tips for a successful application.

What is the recruitment process timeline? When can I expect to hear from you?

We will keep in touch after each stage of the recruitment process to advise if your application is progressing.

If you don’t receive a confirmation email of your application within 24 - 48 hours of your application being submitted, check your junk folders and set us up as a known email address ( so you don't miss out on important correspondence throughout the recruitment process.

Why can’t I see the business area I'm interested in applying for listed on the Graduate Program application form?

If the business area you’re interested in is not appearing on the application page, it means the role has been filled by successful Graduates & Summer Interns and is now closed.

I missed the application window. Will there be another round of hiring for the upcoming Graduate Program?

We generally complete all hiring a year in advance. Should any further opportunities become available, these will be advertised on our website. We’d encourage you to join our Talent Community in the meantime so we can keep you up to date with all things happening at CommBank, including any vacant roles.

What is an expression of interest?

You may see us advertise opportunities as ‘expression of interest only’. This means that we do not have a current role, however if we have one become available we will consider applicants who applied to the expression of interest. If and when a role becomes available, we’ll be in touch to re-confirm your interest and availability and discuss next steps.

Can I send a hard copy of my resume or email my resume directly to you instead of applying online?

No. All applications must be submitted online.

I'm working for CommBank but not on the Graduate Program. Is the application procedure for me different? What do I need to do to apply?

All applicants need to apply online. External candidates should apply through our application portal. When applications are open, the portal can be accessed via the main page of our Graduate Careers site. Internal candidates who are already working for CommBank should apply through the Career Hub on Sidekick. All applicants will go through the same recruitment process.

Assessment Centres

How can I prepare for the Assessment Centre?

It pays to be prepared! Do your homework before the Assessment Centre and find out everything you can about the Program and us. Also, it’s worth reflecting on how your skills and experience match what we’re looking for. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and network with CommBank leaders within the business area you have applied to, so we recommend you’re prepared to discuss your interest and understanding in this area.

Do you help financially when travelling from interstate to an Assessment Centre?

Yes. Where you are required to travel to meet with us, we will assist in subsidising interstate travel to Assessment Centres. Available amounts will be discussed with each individual candidate.

Do you offer virtual Assessment Centres?

In light of our response to COVID-19, we’ll offer virtual assessment processes where we are not able to bring our team and our candidates together face to face. You will be advised during the application process of whether you can expect to come through either the virtual or face-to-face Assessment Centre.

Do you help financially if I relocate to accept a role?

Yes. We will provide some assistance to graduates needing to relocate for the Graduate Program. Available amounts will be discussed with individual candidates.

What is the starting salary for graduates?

Our starting salary is competitive with the graduate market. We will discuss details of remuneration and our bonus structure throughout the recruitment process. We also offer rewards and benefits that don’t make up the cash component of your salary, but still offer cost savings to you.

Do you offer support for graduates to complete further tertiary qualifications and training?

Yes. We support employees who want to enhance their professional development through tertiary study. This is something you would need to discuss with your manager, as you need to consider the benefit to the business and your ability to manage your work/life/study balance.

Can I travel overseas with CommBank?

While we do have offices around the globe, the majority of our employees are based in Australia. However, in some cases our graduates will have the opportunity to work overseas.

I’m having trouble with my application. What do I do?

Please call HR Direct on 1800 989 696 and a member of our team can help you navigate the application process.

How can I contact you?

Please get in touch via email at and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
