About Global Markets

As part of Institutional Banking and Markets (IB&M), Global Markets is responsible for the trading and sales activities in financial markets encompassing all foreign exchange, commodities, fixed income and interest rate products.

Our teams are organised along the functions of sales, trading and enabling activities and operate in all key offshore locations including Europe, Asia and the United States.

Our teams

  • Global Markets teams include:

    • Trading: Comprised of specialised teams focused on the trading of foreign exchange, bonds, interest rates and fixed income and credit products in the broader financial markets
    • Sales: Comprised of specialised sales teams who deliver financial risk management solutions in foreign exchange, fixed income and interest rates to our corporate and institutional clients
    • Quantitative Solutions and Systematic Markets: Focused on the pricing, risk/data/financial analytics and technology of the trading floor
    • Structuring: Focused on creating bespoke client solutions across all products, working in collaboration with the trading and sales teams
    • Global Markets Chief Operating Office: An enablement function that manages strategic projects, the investment portfolio, change and business management for the Global Markets business
    • Commodities: Comprised of specialised teams focused on the sales and trading across the full spectrum of commodities including agriculture, energy and metals
    • CommBank IQ: A new joint venture with Quantium, CommBank IQ combines Australia’s largest pool of transaction data and the nation’s leading data science capability to deliver powerful insights to Australian businesses, governments and investors
    • QDAT Core: Focused on delivering a robust and sustainable technology foundation across data and use of infrastructure, QDAT Core is responsible for driving better cost transparency and operational excellence for IB&M and the Group

Our Summer Analyst Program

  • The global marketplace is as diverse as our client base. As such, we need a range of talent from a broad range of academic backgrounds and experience.

    The Global Markets Summer Analyst roles are ideal for students who are passionate about working in the Global Financial Markets. The Program will provide you with the opportunity to join one of our teams listed above, however you’ll also gain exposure to a number of other teams across Global Markets through dedicated learning sessions, desk sits, networking events with senior leaders, trading simulation games and much more.

    In this 10-week Program, starting around late November, you’ll become part of a collaborative and inclusive trading floor and take on meaningful and tangible work. Your day-to-day tasks will vary depending on the area:

    • Trading: Pricing foreign exchange products or building interest rate curves
    • Sales: Helping with client pitches or creating financial models to evaluate hedging strategies
    • Quantitative Solutions and Systematic Markets: Supporting the build out of a derivative pricing tool or app for usage within Global Markets
    • Structuring: Working on client thematics or bespoke client structures and solutions across all products

    Whichever area you’re in, you’ll experience a fast-paced, dynamic work environment and learn first-hand how we create value for our clients.

    Alongside extensive training and networking opportunities, you’ll be supported by a buddy and dedicated Program Manager, who’ll work with your team and Manager to ensure your success throughout the Program.

What we look for

  • Our leaders come from a wide variety of backgrounds – Arts, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, French History and Mechanical Engineering to name a few. We’re not looking for specific degree disciplines, rather we are seeking capabilities that are highly transferable into the day-to-day work we do.

    We're looking for high-achieving candidates who are performance-driven, proactive, ambitious and insightful. You’ll have a risk mindset and be adaptable to change within a dynamic environment.  

How to apply

  • This opportunity is open to students who are: 

    • Currently in their penultimate year of a university degree or postgraduate studies (MBA excluded) 
    • An Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of applying OR a New Zealand citizen already residing in Australia, who is an Australian resident for tax purposes 
    • Maintaining a minimum 65% grade point average (GPA)/weighted average mark 
  • To apply: 

    1. Complete our application form and attach all required documents
    2. Complete our Online Testing (you will not be required to complete a Digital Interview)
    3. Complete our Coding Assessment (this is mandatory for candidates who are studying software engineering, data/computer science or have proficiency in a programming language) 
    4. Complete two rounds of interviews

    Successful applicants will commence the Global Markets Summer Analyst Program in late November – early December each year.
