Our Graduate & Summer Intern Programs

Our Graduate Program

Designed to attract the best and brightest, our Graduate Program is a challenging and rewarding way to kick-start a long-term career with us.

You’ll start with us in February, but the length of your Program varies based on which business area you choose.

You’ll begin your CommBank career with an orientation conference in Sydney, where you’ll hear from senior leaders and renowned speakers, immerse yourself in all things CommBank, and network with fellow graduates from all parts of our business.  You’ll then spend time settling into your business area and meeting the business leaders and sponsors who’ll support you throughout your program.

Throughout your first year we provide loads of support to help you to maximize your experience. We help you identify your individual focus areas, and provide you with tailored development sessions on-demand or in person.  Our full graduate cohort will come together again in Sydney mid-year for an intensive development event to enhance your capabilities even further.  Along the way you’ll be supported through countless opportunities to learn, grow and showcase your talent within a structured, fast-paced and engaging program.

Within your business area you’ll complete a rotational program. Rotations help you to learn about different parts of your business area, build more connections, further develop skills, and decide where you want to take your career next.

At the conclusion of your business area’s graduate program, you’ll be supported to find a role which best suits your capabilities and interests. Ideally you’ll have built relationships and tried a number of experiences throughout your Graduate Program to support you in this process.

  • Shine: Contribute from day one by working on real projects that impact our business and our customers, within Australia’s largest bank.
  • Develop: Participate in market-leading training to develop your technical and soft skills. This will help with the transition to full-time work from university and ensure you excel in your immediate and future roles.
  • Network: Build networks and friendships through unparalleled access to senior leaders, project leads and program sponsors, enhancing your personal and business profile.
  • Contribute: Give back to the community through graduate initiatives, driving positive change across our organisation and improving the wellbeing of our graduate cohort.

Our Summer Intern Program

While summer is a great time for lazing on the beach, it’s also the perfect time to give your career a head start with our Summer Intern Program.

Our 10-week Program gives you a taste of what it’s like to work with us. You’ll be given full support and training to help you decide if CommBank is the right fit for you.

At the end of the Program you’ll also have the opportunity to apply early for our Graduate Program for the following year.

You’ll enjoy an intensive introduction to life at CommBank, learn how we operate, get involved in great projects and meet inspirational people who’ll help you put your career on the right path.

During the placement you’ll be partnered alongside passionate and energetic leaders and teams, allowing you to work on challenging real life projects. You’ll contribute to outcomes which positively impact our business and our customers. During the placement we’ll encourage you to build your professional network with your peers and with leaders from across CommBank.

Responsibilities for each placement vary based on the team and role you’ll be working with. At the commencement of our placement, your leaders will work with you to determine a project, set of tasks, or targets to achieve during your placement. They’ll consider both your current skills and development goals, as well as look for opportunities to stretch them to enhance your experience.

You’ll have an opportunity to build capability on our award winning development program, which will guide you throughout your placement. This program is designed to support you to identify your strengths, and showcase these at the conclusion of the placement. Your internship is based around the concept of experience, exposure and education – combining a series of formal learning events with workplace-based experiential learning and exposure to new and different ideas, thinking and practices.

Applications typically open in July, and the Program starts in late November.

We have roles available nationally (both metro and regional), although the majority of our roles are based in Sydney.

You should apply for our Summer Intern Program online. If your initial application is successful, you’ll have the chance to complete some online assessments, a digital interview, and then possibly visit one of our Assessment Centres for a face-to-face meeting with our team.

Frequently asked questions

About the Programs

What does CommBank look for in graduates and summer interns?
We look for well-rounded candidates who have successfully balanced university, work experience and extra-curricular activities. Other skills essential to working successfully with us include the ability to work in a team and a desire to learn and drive your own career. Most importantly, we look for your motivation to work in the financial services industry, and with us.

How many graduates and summer interns do you take each year?
Many of our Business Areas are constantly growing. Our Graduate Program generally takes approximately 150 – 200 graduates each year and our Summer Intern Program takes approximately 120 – 150 interns each year.

What are the start dates of the Programs and how long do they run for?
The Graduate Program starts in February. The length of each Program varies depending on which business area you are interested in, but the majority of our programs run for 18 months. The Summer Intern Program runs for 10 weeks from late November to February.

What locations are you recruiting for?
The majority of our roles are Sydney based. We do have a number of roles available in other cities and regional areas, generally across our Business and Private Banking business area.

Application and recruitment process

Can I apply for more than one business area?
We ask you to select one business area preference on your application form. To help you make this decision, we recommend you read about our different business areas in detail before applying.  If we read your application and think you’re a perfect fit for another area, we’ll give you a call to discuss.

When will you be visiting my university?
Please check out the key dates section above to find out when we will be visiting your university and running events.

What is the recruitment process?
You can read about our application process here.

What is the recruitment process timeline? When can I expect to hear from you?
We will keep in touch after each stage of the recruitment process to advise if your application is progressing.

Can I send a hard copy of my resume or email my resume directly to you instead of applying online?
No. All applications must be submitted online. Please read about our application process here

I'm working for CommBank but not on the Graduate Program. Is the application procedure for me different? What do I need to do to apply?
All applicants need to apply online and all applicants will go through the same recruitment process.

Assessment Centres

How can I prepare for the Assessment Centre?
It pays to be prepared! Do your homework before the Assessment Centre and find out everything you can about the Program and us. Also, it’s worth reflecting on how your skills and experience match what we’re looking for.

Do you help financially when travelling from interstate to an Assessment Centre?
Yes. We will assist in subsidising interstate travel to Assessment Centres. Available amounts will be discussed with each individual candidate.

Support

Do you help financially if I relocate to accept a role?
Yes. We will provide some assistance to graduates needing to relocate for the Graduate Program. Available amounts will be discussed with individual candidates.

What is the starting salary for graduates?
Our starting salary is competitive with the graduate market. We will discuss details of remuneration and our bonus structure throughout the recruitment process. We also offer rewards and benefits that do not make up the cash component of your salary, but still offer cost savings to you.

Do you offer support for graduates to complete further tertiary qualifications and training?
Yes. We support employees who want to enhance their professional development through tertiary study. This is something you would need to discuss with your manager, as you need to consider the benefit to the business and your ability to manage your work/life/study balance.

Can I travel overseas with CommBank?
While we do have offices around the globe, the majority of our employees are based in Australia. However, in some cases our graduates will have the opportunity to work overseas.

How can I contact you?
Please get in touch via email at graduaterecruitment@cba.com.au and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
