1. Complete our short application form

  • Already bank with us? We'll pre-fill the info you've already told us so it's speedier
  • New to CommBank? We'll ask for info like your full name, home address and contact details then ask you to create a password so you can bank online in NetBank
  • We’ll also ask you about your tax residency (a Government requirement). Here’s why.

2. New to CommBank? We’ll quickly check your ID online

Have your Australian driver’s licence, Medicare card, passport or Australian birth certificate handy. You can pass with one, but having more than one may improve your chances of passing. You can complete your ID check in branch too.

3. Download the CommBank app or log on to NetBank

Start banking straight away. While your Debit Mastercard is on its way to you, download the app or log on to NetBank to: 

  • Withdraw money from CommBank ATMs using Cardless Cash5
  • Pay friends using just their mobile number6

4. When your Debit Mastercard arrives

You’ll need to activate it and set a PIN first in the CommBank app or NetBank. While you’re waiting for your card, you can use Cardless Cash from the CommBank app.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you:

  • Are aged 14 years and over (for under 14s, see our Smart Access Account for Youth)
  • Have an Australian residential address. If you're applying from overseas, see our Moving to Australia section
  • Are opening the account in your personal names (no Company, Trading or Trust accounts - see business accounts). To open a trust account, please apply at any branch
  • Have a Tax File Number (TFN) or TFN Exemption. You don't have to provide your TFN, but if you don't CommBank is legally required to deduct tax from any interest earned on the account above a certain threshold

A monthly account fee waiver will also apply if you’re under 25 years of age, or you’re a full-time or part-time tertiary student at an Australian educational institution or undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship on Student Options. You may also be eligible for a different monthly account fee exemption if you have an aged, disability or war veterans’ pension deposited in your account, have a balance of $50,000 or more in eligible contributing accounts, are reliant on over the counter services because of a disability or have an eligible home loan.
